Module 5: Skills, the Force Multiplier

Chapter 16: Learn Claude Code Skills for Sysadmins

In this chapter, you'll learn what Claude Code Skills are, how the SKILL.md format works, and why they change how you approach repetitive sysadmin tasks.

In the previous chapter, we compared configuration files across three servers, generated a structured drift report, and completed Module 4.

Now it's time to start Module 5, where Claude Code goes beyond being just a coding assistant and becomes a platform you can customize for your own development process.

In this chapter, you'll learn about Skills, which help you automate repetitive tasks, create consistent processes, and teach Claude how to handle specific jobs the way you want.

By the end of this chapter, you'll understand what a Skill is, how the SKILL.md file works, when you should create a Skill, and how Skills fit into Claude Code.

In the next three chapters, we'll build three practical Skills from scratch that you can use in your day-to-day Linux system administration tasks.
